Heat and hailstorm warning issued for Berlin and Brandenburg

The German Weather Service (DWD) has announced a heat and hailstorm weather warning for the federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg on August 15, 2023.

DWD forecasts heat and hail for Berlin

A heatwave is heading for Berlin and Brandenburg and residents can expect some particularly sticky and sweaty hours this afternoon.

The DWD has warned that central parts of the German city will be the most affected by the heat, with temperatures expected to rise to 33 degrees. Brandenburgers can expect a high of 31 degrees before heavy rain, hail, thunderstorms and high humidity arrive in both federal states

In recent years, heat days or “Hitzetage”, days where the temperature reaches 30 degrees celsius or above, have occurred earlier in the summer and more regularly across Germany and Europe. Ahead of the plan to publish a heatwave protection plan for Germany by the end of the summer, the German government has reminded people to drink plenty of water, wear loose clothing and stay out of direct sunlight.

Extreme weather crosses Europe

During the summer when the hottest average global temperature was recorded, the weather in Germany has been hot and temperamental, but apart from a large hailstorm in Reutlingen, the country has more or less managed to avoid the extreme weather that has been wreaking havoc throughout other parts of Europe in recent weeks.

After days of heavy rainfall and flooding in Norway brought by Storm Hans, the Glomma River dam and a train bridge recently collapsed. Down in Portugal, emergency services have been fighting three major wildfires near the southwest town of Odemira and across in Slovenia six people have died as the country was hit by flooding and landslides.
