Berlin is bracing for another heatwave on September 3 and 4. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued heat alerts for the capital, Dresden, Leipzig, Magdeburg and Potsdam.

Heat warning issued for Berlin and eastern states

Following last week’s heatwave, Tuesday and Wednesday will see the weather hot up once again in Berlin and the surrounding eastern states of Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The DWD has issued a heat warning for the capital between 11am and 7pm on Tuesday, with highs of 32 degrees celsius expected this afternoon.

The weather will cool in Berlin on Tuesday evening. The night will bring clear skies followed by showers. Heat will return on Wednesday when temperatures between 31 and 35 degrees are forecast.

“This is an unusual start to autumn. 34 degrees in the first weeks of September is definitely record-breaking,” meteorologist Ingo Bertram told public broadcaster rbb. “The weather forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday is around 10 degrees celsius warmer than normal.” 

South of Berlin, 31 degrees is forecast for Leipzig on Wednesday and 33 degrees for Dresden. It will be a little cooler along the Baltic Sea coastline, with 28 degrees forecast in Rostock.

Heavy rainfall hits North Rhine-Westphalia

Meanwhile, parts of the west are grappling with flooding. Intense rainfall over a short period led to hundreds of emergency services callouts across North Rhine-Westphalia on the night of September 2.

Ratingen, a small city north of Düsseldorf has been particularly affected. 120 cases of water damage had already been reported by the early evening on Monday, according to emergency services.

The region is now bracing for another spate of heavy rainfall forecast for the early afternoon on Wednesday.
