Summer isn’t over yet. From Munich to Hamburg, Germany is bracing itself for temperatures in the mid-thirties this week. The German Weather Service (DWD) forecasts warm weather to persist through the weekend.

Wednesday and Thursday will bring highs of 35C in Germany

The midweek in Germany is bringing highs of 35 degrees celsius in Berlin and Leipzig, 34 degrees in Frankfurt, 31 degrees in Munich and 30 degrees in Hamburg, Rostock, Bremen and Konstanz.

If temperatures do reach the predicted 35 degrees in Berlin, Thursday will be the hottest day of 2024 in the capital so far.

Moving into Friday temperatures will remain between 30 and 33 degrees in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Hesse, but will cool in the north, with 22 degrees expected in Bremen and Hamburg. Berlin and Dresden will remain a sticky 28 and 29 degrees respectively.

Sunday will see the same patterns; temperatures around 30 degrees will persist in the south and another cooldown is expected in the north and northeast, with 22 degrees forecast for Hamburg and 24 degrees for Berlin.

How to keep cool in a German heatwave

As climate change means heatwaves in Europe are becoming more intense, the German government is giving specific advice about how to stay cool.

Government recommendations include drinking between two and three litres of water throughout the day, rescheduling intensive activities for cooler times of day and wearing a head covering and high-factor sun cream to protect your skin while outside.

If you are in Berlin and looking for relief from the 35-degree heat, one of the city’s outdoor swimming pools may be a better option so late in the summer. Due to consistently warm weather a larger algae bloom has shut down some of the city’s favourite natural swimming spots. 

Berlin’s State Office for Health and Social Affairs says swimming is not currently recommended at Strandbad Wannsee, Grunewaldturm, Kleine Badewiese, Breitehorn, Lieper Bucht, Radfahrerwiese, Große Steinlanke and Alter Hof.

Due to dangerous levels of E.coli bacteria, the department has also warned against swimming at the FKK area in Teufelsee.
