Zollverein Ice Rink - Essen
Visit one of the most unusual and ideal locations for ice skating this winter at the UNESCO World Heritage site Zollverein in Essen. The former coal mine complex turned cultural events location will host a 150-metre ice rink, open to skaters and ice sports enthusiasts of all levels!
Ice skating at a UNESCO World Heritage site
One of the most fascinating places in Germany to skate, the Zollverein ice rink offers plenty of space for the entire family. Walkers are available for the little ones - or anyone who needs a bit of extra help balancing on the ice - and there is a skating rental hub for those who don’t have their own pair.
Next to the huge ice skating rink, there is also a 180 square metre area just for curling. You should reserve your spot to try this fun winter sport in advance, as places tend to fill up fast!
Winter fun on the ice at Zollverein
In addition to enjoying the impressive 1.800 square metre industrial area surrounding the ice rink, visitors are also treated to a special show after dusk. A light installation bathes Zollverein and the ice rink in colourful lights, creating a special, romantic winter atmosphere.
After skaters have worked up an appetite they can refresh themselves with a traditional snack and hot beverage (or two) at the winter village adjacent to the rink. There is even a wooden stall with original gifts, for those looking to buy loved ones (or themselves) a special gift.

The Zollverein ice rink is open from 3pm to 8pm during the week and 10am to 10pm on Saturdays. What’s more, every Saturday there is a special disco night on the ice rink, open to all skate and disco lovers, from 8pm to midnight!
