Transport disruptions after storm batters Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg

Inclement weather across Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg has led to transport disruptions across Munich and left around 16 people injured by falling or damaged trees. The DWD has warned that stormy weather will likely continue into Saturday, August 26.

Stormy causes travel disruption in Munich

Stormy weather crossing Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg since the night of August 24 to 25 has already led to at least 16 people being injured and travel disruptions in multiple regions.

Many commuters in Munich were greeted with considerable disruption to public transport this morning, with some S-Bahn routes remaining completely closed following the storm. “Delays can be expected on the main route and the entire S-Bahn network,” Deutsche Bahn announced on Friday morning.

As of 8.50am, the S1 and S2 (Dachau - Altomünster) lines are up and running again, but with delays, while the S2 (Markt Schwaben - Erding), S4 and S6 lines remain closed until further notice.

Over in Baden-Württemberg, regional transport has been disrupted, namely the IRE 6 (Mössingen - Hechingen), the RE 2 (Donaueschingen - St. Georgen) and the RE 7 / RB 27 (Freiburg im Breisgau Hbf - Müllheim). In Freiburg alone, the emergency services carried out 383 operations between 7.45pm and 11pm, including saving someone who was trapped in a flooded basement.

Two Bodensee campsites evacuated during storm

So far, injuries have largely been caused by falling trees or branches. 900 holidaymakers in Lindau am Bodensee were evacuated from a campsite on Thursday evening after the storm began, having to spend the night in the Inselhalle events space and conference centre. There were similar scenes in Friedrichshafen am Bodensee, where 300 campers were evacuated and brought to a gym hall.

Further inland, in Nördlingen, 10 bikers were injured, three of whom were brought to hospital, after being injured by flying motorcycle parts on display at a meeting of motorcyclists. According to police, parts of the venue’s stage also came loose during the storm.
