Severe storm warning issued for parts of Germany

Following flooding in Bavaria, a severe weather warning has been issued for parts of southwestern Germany as storms are expected to move further west.

Four weather warnings issued for long weekend in Germany

As the long weekend begins, the German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a severe storm warning for parts of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland.

Extremely heavy rain is expected - more than 40 litres per square metre over one hour - particularly in Saarbrücken and southern parts of Rhineland-Palatinate.

A level two weather warning has been issued for rainfall in Stuttgart, Mainz and Wiesbaden, while northern and eastern parts of the country will see some rain but will be predominantly sunny.

Nuremberg sees flooding on night of May 16

The warning that storms will hit Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland comes after a night of flooding in Nuremberg on May 16.

After flooded streets caused chaos for drivers and public transport, basements were flooded and emergency services attended 300 operations during the first three hours of the storm.

Munich’s Technical University also succumbed to the storm when a large, underground car park on the campus was flooded with rainwater.
