Berlin's BER wins award for best airport in Europe

Berlin’s infamous BER airport has won the title of the best airport in Europe, according to a ranking by the UK-based travel portal Eurochange.

Berlin-Brandenburg Airport ranked best in Europe

Scoring an overall 79,5 out of 100, Eurochange has ranked Berlin-Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt as the best airport in Europe.

The airport scored particularly high in three considered categories; punctuality of departing and arriving flights, attractions for children and the cost of beer. According to Eurochange, 80 percent of flights in and out of BER are punctual.

BER opened its gates in autumn 2020, after 14 years of construction, an opening delay of nine years and over budget by 6 million euros

The project was so much of a prolonged national laughing stock, that the Willy Brandt Foundation and former chancellor’s family began to distance his name from the airport. Could it all have been worth it for a reasonably priced beer in the departure lounge?

Munich and Hamburg ranked among best airports in Europe

While BER took the top spot, two other German airports made it into the top five, with airports in Munich and Hamburg coming in second and fourth respectively.

The Bavarian airport also did well for punctuality and beer affordability, and scored considerably better than BER when it came to the choice of shops in which passengers could pass the time. Hamburg was praised in the same departments as BER, punctuality, children’s attractions and the cost of beer, but did less well when it came to shops available, scoring a 72,5 overall.
