Stormy weather forecast to reach northeastern Germany

Following flooding in Bavaria and Saarland, stormy weather is expected to cross Germany and reach northeastern parts of the country in the coming days.

Heavy rain to continue after flooding in western Germany

Heavy rain concentrated in Saarland and neighbouring Rhineland-Palatinate is expected to continue on Tuesday after a weekend of flooding in the region.

"On Tuesday, a low-pressure zone will form again over Germany, in which the risk of severe weather will increase," the German Weather Service (DWD) reported.

Basements and streets in southwestern parts of the country were flooded over the Whitsun holiday weekend, with emergency services being called out around 4.000 times in Saarland. Emergency services have recorded one fatality after a 67-year-old woman was hit by an ambulance.

Storms expected to arrive in Eifel area and Hesse

Forecasts from the DWD predict that from the afternoon of May 21, stormy weather will move further to the northeast, hitting the Eifel mountain range in Rhineland-Palatinate and central Hesse.

On Wednesday morning, sunny weather will return over the southwest as storms move up to Bremen and break over Berlin and Rostock. Intermittent sunny weather and temperatures in the early twenties will return to the northeast by Thursday morning.
