Germany’s flagship airline Lufthansa has announced that it will invest a hefty sum in upgrading the interiors of 100 of its long-haul planes this year. Some of the new seating options include a “sleeper’s row” in economy class and double beds for business class passengers. 

Lufthansa Group announces cabin redesign including double beds

The Lufthansa Group announced this week that it intends to invest a total of 2,5 billion euros in products and services by 2025, including replacing almost 30.000 seats in 100 of its long-haul aircraft. The standout change is that, from autumn 2023, passengers flying with loved ones from German airports will have the option of having a bit more “togetherness” on the new Lufthansa planes, which in business class will offer double beds! 

“Are you travelling as a couple? We suggest a tete-a-tete on closer double seats, which can change into a comfortable double bed thanks to a retractable centre console”, the international company wrote in a statement. 

According to the design concept, couples will be able to convert their seats into a double bed at the touch of a button. Don’t worry: if you’re travelling alone and not keen on cosying up next to your neighbour, a privacy barrier and console will make the bed into two singles. The new designs will also appear on newer SWISS planes from 2025. Double beds are already in use on some long-haul flights operated by Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways.

Travel website Frankfurtflyer confirmed that more detailed designs will be released in the coming months. According to Swiss newspaper Watson, both Lufthansa and SWISS hope that passengers in the seats will behave themselves and not, as the newspaper put it, “attempt to join the Mile High Club.”

Economy passengers can book empty seats while first class gets suites

Economy and first class passengers will also be treated to new seat designs and concepts from the autumn. For those who want a bit of extra space (and have some extra cash), Lufthansa will allow you to book an entire row of seats. The so-called “Sleeper’s Row” can be converted into a lying space by folding up the armrests and adding a mattress. In future, passengers on long-haul flights will also have the option of booking empty seats next to them. 

Most of us will only ever see the pictures, but for first class passengers there will also be the option to book an individual suite with a closing door. The one-metre-wide seat converts into a comfortable bed, while entertainment is provided on a screen that extends across the width of the suite. There’s even a separate wardrobe in case you want to unpack and make yourself at home.
