Munich International School: Nurturing and inspiring the citizens of tomorrow
“Just another international school”? Think again. Set in a peaceful parkland, with world-class facilities, a varied, holistic curriculum of academic and extracurricular pursuits, and a vibrant, thriving community of students, parents and teachers, Munich International School (MIS) is far from your average international school.
Munich International School: World-class facilities in an idyllic setting
Within easy reach of Munich, MIS is a community school where more than 1.200 students comprising 65 nationalities are taught to flourish and make a positive difference.
The purpose-built, 26-acre campus is located on an idyllic nature reserve near Starnberg and gives students all they need to learn, grow and thrive: well-equipped classrooms, laboratories, performing arts spaces, outdoor facilities, two student libraries and a modern languages complex. From grades 1 to 12, all students have access to digital devices.
Holistic, international curriculum and brilliant teachers
MIS has been authorised for the IB Diploma Programme since 1980 and so has decades of experience as a highly successful IB World School. The school’s curriculum follows the frameworks of the three IBO programmes through three school sections - Junior School, Middle School and Senior School - and is delivered by a caring and competent teaching team from more than 24 countries.
The curriculum focuses on imparting essential learnings and experiences on students and reflecting today’s modern world. The innovative classroom and future-orientated facilities allow MIS to embrace technology and teach subjects like coding and computing, design thinking, and social justice.
The MIS Class of 2022 achieved an IB Diploma pass rate of 100 percent with an average of 37 points - a leading score among international schools in Germany and globally.
The team of guidance counsellors at MIS are on hand to help students in their senior year with their university applications. MIS students have recently been admitted to prestigious institutions like MIT, Princeton, LMU Munich and Imperial College London.
Striving towards a balanced education with extracurricular activities
At Munich International School, “schooling” is not just about the learning that takes place in classrooms. MIS strives towards a balanced education by providing varied opportunities for students to develop new skills both inside and outside their lessons - whether that be taking part in competitive sports, taking music lessons or receiving instruction in their mother tongue.
MIS study trips have taken students all over the world from Scotland to Silicon Valley, while the school’s thriving Duke of Edinburgh Award programme has, for the last 10 years, been inspiring students to discover new and lifelong passions, maintain physical and mental fitness, find their place in society, and unlock their potential - all under the motto “There is more in you than you think”.
The Award shapes students into responsible, well-balanced and compassionate global citizens by championing arts, activities, athletics and community engagement. For the “Service” section of the award, students have coached younger students, launched an eco-school project, worked in a local animal shelter, and even aided refugee centres by teaching Ukrainian students English.
The “Expedition” section of the award - for which students need to learn the art of navigation, survival and cookery - sees them venture into the forest and trails surrounding the MIS campus, exploring the wilder side of Bavaria. Sometimes unpredictable conditions throw a curveball, and it’s these encounters with the uncontrollable that help teach the students skills like teamwork, adaptability and determination. In today’s ever-changing world, the award is perhaps more relevant than ever.
