This year's Christmas market at Charlottenburg Palace will be the last
One of the most beloved Christmas markets in Berlin, the Christmas market at Charlottenburg Palace (Weihnachtsmarkt vor dem Schloss Charlottenburg), will take place for the last time this year.
Weihnachtsmarkt vor dem Schloss Charlottenburg will not return after 2022
The famous annual Christmas market that transforms the grounds of Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin into a magical oasis of stalls, mulled wine and festive trinkets will turn off its fairy lights for the last time at the end of the Christmas holidays this year.
As rbb24 reports, the market operator’s rental agreement with the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation, which manages the palace, expires at the end of this year and will not be renewed. The foundation is instead planning to build a visitor centre on the site where the market currently takes place.
Berlin Christmas market has been cancelled for last two years
The romantic background of the palace and the impressive light installations have made this Christmas market one of the most popular in Germany’s capital city, among both tourists and locals.
This year’s final hurrah will be made even more poignant since the Charlottenburg Christmas market has been cancelled for the past two years in a row: first due to the lockdown in 2020, and then in 2021 when organisers said that entry requirements and restrictions on the sale of alcohol during the coronavirus pandemic made holding the event untenable.
