As well as making changes to its quarantine rules, Germany has recently amended its coronavirus regulations to reduce the amount of time for which someone is considered immune following a COVID infection. 

Immunity status for recovered people will only last 3 months

The German government has once again changed its COVID regulations. From now on, anyone who has previously contracted coronavirus and recovered will have a more short-lived immunity status. 

The Federal Ministry of Health and the Robert Koch Institute confirmed over the weekend that, as of January 15, the recovered status expires after three months (90 days after the positive test result). After that, the person is recommended to get a booster shot to be considered fully-vaccinated. Previously, the recovered status was valid for six months. 

Change has an implication for 2G and 2G+ rules in Germany

With 2G and 2G+ rules in place across Germany, this means that people who have recovered from coronavirus will only be able to gain access to certain public spaces (for instance with a digital coronavirus certificate) for three months before they will need to get vaccinated. 

The recommendations still stipulate that proof of recovery can only be proven with a positive PCR test taken at least 28 days ago.
