Uber Eats arrives in Munich and Frankfurt
No food in the fridge and no desire to go to the shops? Uber Eats has got your back! Shortly after arriving in Berlin, the delivery arm of the popular on-demand taxi company is expanding to two new German cities.
Uber Eats expands into Frankfurt and Munich
Three months after launching in Berlin, Uber has announced that it is expanding its offering in Germany. The app will commence food deliveries in Frankfurt and Munich as soon as this August.
Uber Eats’ expansion into Germany began in May in Berlin with an initial cohort of around 200 restaurants. Three months later, more than 700 restaurants are now registered with the app, which is used by more than 1,2 million Berliners.
Stiff competition in German food delivery market
The food delivery market in Germany is currently dominated by the Dutch company Lieferando, but competition is rapidly heating up after the coronavirus pandemic sparked an enormous uptick in demand for food delivery services.
In May, the pioneering company Delivery Hero announced that it would return to Germany after a three-year hiatus, while Lieferando said it would branch out into grocery delivery services, in direct competition with other companies like Uber Eats and Gorillas.
However, the companies face something of an uphill struggle in Germany, where a tendency to shy away from technology means the main competitor to delivery apps is still the telephone.
