The scariest Halloween events in Germany

It is the spookiest month of the year - October - which means it's time to get ready for the eeriest, creepiest and most ghoulish Halloween parties! If you love dressing up in elaborate costumes, enjoy getting scared or are just a fan of horrifying holiday then take note!

Although Halloween is not an official German holiday, the celebration is becoming more popular every year, and with multiple spooktacular events taking place across the country, it’s time to starting planning your costume!

Halloween happenings in Germany

A celebration for young and old, this year Halloween (October 31) lands on a Thursday. October 31 also happens to be Reformation Day, a public holiday celebrated in five German states, so a number of parties will be taking place on Wednesday, October 30, as well as the weekend before and the weekend after.

Halloween at Burg Frankenstein

What better backdrop to celebrate Halloween at then at the German castle that is said to have inspired Mary Shelley’s famous novel, Frankenstein? Every Halloween for the last 42 years, Burg Frankenstein near Darmstadt transforms into one of the biggest haunted “houses” in Germany. With more than 200 monsters, zombies, ghouls, werewolves, witches and more ready to scare you throughout 12 different zones, Halloween at Burg Frankenstein will definitely put your nerves to the test! Every Sunday is a day dedicated for families, with scary fun for young and old!

Halloween at the Kulturbrauerei

The biggest Halloween party in Berlin, Halloween at the Kulturbrauerei transforms this former brewery into a real scare-fest for two special evenings! Each area of the Kulturbrauerei is decked out according to a different creepy theme, with its own DJs and music genres, from techno and dance to R’n’B and pop. Attendees who dress up in their Halloween finest will be rewarded with free entry on November 1, so what could possibly be holding you back?

Halloween Horror Festival at Movie Park Germany

One of the most notorious Halloween events in Germany, the Halloween Horror Festival at Movie Park Germany brings the scariest, freakiest and creepiest movie monsters to life right before your eyes! 250 of the most iconic murderers wander through the theme park after dark, so visitors beware! Some rides are given a horrible Halloween touch as Movie Park hosts thrilling shows, mazes and a new 4-D movie - all of which are sure to haunt you in your dreams! Now in its 21st year, this is one Halloween horror bash you don’t want to miss!

Festival of Magicians & Witches

A Halloween celebration open to all ages, the Festival of Magicians and Witches in Mayen sees the city centre become a playground for witches, goblins and magicians alike! This traditional Halloween event includes everything you could ever want to try, from pumpkin carving to magic workshops and shows, and even a costume competition! A creepy circus, a thrilling knight’s market and a haunted castle offer different entertainment programmes throughout the day, making the festival an ideal family day out. 

Horror Nights at Babelsberg Filmpark 

• Oct 5 - Nov 2 (Every Saturday night, as well as Oct 25 and Nov 2)

Get ready to come face to face with legendary cult horror figures like Pennywise, Freddy Krueger and Ghostface during the Horror Nights at Babelsberg Filmpark! Located just outside of Berlin, this working studio recreates some of the most iconic horror movie sets of all time and sets loose 200 monsters, zombies and mutants to hunt visitors down. Explore the many mazes, haunted houses and sets during their special Halloween Horror Nights, or test your survival skills in one of the monster zones. Don’t forget to check out the new show at the Volcano Arena, which includes frightening scenes, stunts and dances.

Halloween at Legoland

The ghosts are on the loose again this Halloween at Legoland! Every year, Legoland Germany hosts a special Halloween festival that sees the theme park give its attractions, rides and sights a creepy Halloween makeover, offering fun yet frightening events suitable for the whole family. Ask yourself if you are brave enough to knock at the Trick-or-Treat house, wander through the Spooky trail or watch Grusical, the first spooky show at Legoland Germany, about a happily-in-love grandfather. Maybe you will even test your nerves at the Lego Hidden Side bus from Oct 26 onwards? Who knows.

Halloween party at Kulturwerft Gollan

• 9pm - 5am
• Kulturwerft Gollan, Einsiedelstraße 6, 23554 Lübeck

The self-proclaimed biggest Halloween party in northern Germany, the Halloween bash at Kulturwerft Gollan in Lübeck sees a former shipyard revamped into the ideal spookfest playground! As well as several different themed areas, each with their own DJs and creepy Halloween atmosphere, the party features a horrifying show team, including a chainsaw murderer, bloodbath and more, that will scare the wits out of all guests from 9pm to 10.30pm. Attendees are encouraged to dress the part to get into the horrible Halloween mood, and the three best costumes will be awarded a prize at midnight - so time to get your scariest outfit out of the wardrobe!
