Heavy rain, thunderstorms and possible flooding are headed for Germany towards the end of this week as the summer weather winds down.

Thursday and Friday will bring heavy rain to Germany

As autumn weather moves in, heavy rain and thunderstorms have been forecast to cross Germany towards the end of this week.

Two high-pressure areas over Scandinavia and the North Sea are expected to bring wet and cold winds, which will move across the border to Poland.

According to Wetter.com, flooding is possible in Germany starting Thursday, when around 100 litres of rain per square metre is expected. On Friday expected rainfall will increase to around 150 litres per square metre.

As climate change in Germany becomes more tangible, climate scientists predict extreme weather events to intensify. 2024 has already seen extreme weather events hit Germany, including the hottest summer ever recorded in the Global North and serious flooding in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria in early June, which killed nine people.

East and southeast expecting the most rainfall

Eastern and southeastern parts of the country are forecast to see the heaviest rainfall this week.

"There could be a very large flood in the southeast and in our neighbouring countries such as Austria and the Czech Republic," meteorologist Ronald Porschke warned.

Forecasters also predict that Bavaria will see some of the first snowfall of the season. Ice and snow are expected along the southern border with Austria, and in parts of Switzerland.
