Germany has set a new world record after a butternut squash at the Kürbis Weigemeisterschaft in Brandenburg weighed in at 62,2 kilograms.

Klaistow butternut weighing 62,2 kg sets new world record

The existing world record for the heaviest butternut has been quashed in Klaistow, Brandenburg after a 62,2 kg squash set a new best.

The giant butternut squash was grown in Spargel- und Erlebnishof Klaistow, Brandenburg until it was big enough to knock the existing butternut victor from its throne, a 59,6 kg butternut from the US.

The reigning German butternut will now be on show in Spargel- und Erlebnishof Klaistow until a “squash slaughter” (Kürbis-Schlachten) on November 3, when it will be diced and turned into soup. The seeds will be kept to grow new squash plants.

905,2 kg pumpkin wins 2024 title

Alongside the world record-breaking butternut, a 905,2 kg pumpkin was given first place in the Klaistow squash growing championships over 83 other competing pumpkins.

But the giant gourd was not big enough to knock out the existing victor, despite being gown from its seeds. Oliver Grafe and his 989,5 kg pumpkin of 2021 continue to hold the record for heaviest pumpkin in Berlin and Brandenburg.

The most recent world record-breaking pumpkin was grown in October 2023, when Minnesota horticulture teacher Travis Gienger managed to grow a 1,247kg gourd.
