The state government in Berlin has announced plans to turn the former airfield of Tegel Airport into a public park and conservation reserve.

Tegel airfield will become a public park

Berlin’s State Secretary for Climate Protection and Environment Britta Behrendt (CDU) has revealed plans to transform the former airfield of northern Berlin’s Tegel Airport into a park and nature conservation area.

Similar to Tempelhof Park in the southern district of Neukölln, the 190-hectare airfield will become a spot for locals to jog, cycle or skate along the airport’s former runway. The park will be free to enter and will close at night time.

Tegel Airport park will open in 2029

Once the transformation has been completed, Tegel’s Stadtheide, as it is to be called, will open in 2029.

After 72 years in operation, the last flight out of Tegel Airport left in November 2020. Since then the site has been used for housing development, offices, a refugee centre and a nightclub.
