Angela Merkel to release memoir in 2024

Germany’s longest-running Chancellor Angela Merkel has announced that she will release a memoir in November 2024, which centres around questions of freedom.

Angela Merkel announces autobiography

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has announced that she will publish a memoir titled Freedom: Memories 1954-2021 in November 2024.

Penned in collaboration with her long-time advisor Beate Baumann, the book will explore Merkel’s life and career, spanning from her childhood in Brandenburg, then East Germany, to her retirement from politics.

Stretched over around 700 pages, publishing house Kiepenheuer & Witsch has said that the work will give readers a new insight into the personal life and opinions of the famously measured leader.

What does freedom mean to Merkel?

According to Kiepenheuer & Witsch, the question “What does freedom mean to me?”, will lie at the heart of Merkel’s autobiographical work.

As well as considering the democratic conditions required for freedom, Merkel says her book will explore freedom in the sense of finding and following her personal boundaries, during her career in politics and since her retirement.

Expected on shelves on November 26, the book will be published in over 30 countries, including Brazil, Japan, Russia, Taiwan and the US.
