After several days of storms and flooding, it’s going to get a lot hotter in Germany this weekend. Thanks to a warm weather front, the temperature could hit 35 degrees next week. 

Olger causes thunderstorms and extreme weather in Germany

An unstable weather front named “Olger” will bring lots of extreme weather to the federal republic in the coming days, according to wetter.net. Meteorologist Dominik Jung explains that Olger is pushing masses of muggy air into western Germany, raising the likelihood of thunderstorms and severe weather.

On Wednesday, this means that great swathes of the country will be pelted with heavy showers and thunderstorms. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), only the northern regions will be saved from the downpour. Weather warnings have been issued for a wide strip, taking in Baden-Württemberg, parts of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate, southern Saxony-Anhalt and western Saxony. 

According to the DWD, up to 40 litres of rain per square metre could fall in a short space of time, while the conditions are also right for the formation of more extreme weather events like hail and even tornadoes. 

There is also a possibility of regional flooding. As Jung explains, weak air currents mean that thunderstorms are currently remaining relatively static, affecting some areas particularly severely and missing others. “They sometimes dump their wet cargo in the same place over and over again for a long time, and that leads to the risk of flash flooding. Regionally confined flooding is possible.” 

Hot weather with highs of 35 degrees next week

At the same time, however, lots of people will be excited to hear that the temperature is once again heading upwards. On Wednesday, the thermometer is expected to max out somewhere between 20 and 27 degrees, and Thursday will be a little hotter with highs of 22 to 28 degrees. 

By Friday, thankfully, the storm looks set to blow itself out, leaving most of the country bathed in glorious sunshine, with some scattered patches of cloud. Over the weekend, we can look forward to basking in temperatures between 22 and 28 degrees, or even 29 degrees in the Upper Rhine region. 

And next week things are set to get even hotter, with the federal republic predicted to experience its warmest temperatures of the year so far. “At the middle of the month, the weather models currently even indicate peak values of over 30 degrees - up to 32 or 33 degrees,” says Jung. By Monday, it could hit 35 degrees in western Germany - but even in northern cities like Hamburg and Flensburg, temperatures as high as 30 degrees are possible.
