4 local markets in Berlin to try this weekend

Tired of being stuck inside? Hang the cold winter weather, why not get outside and check out some local markets in Berlin this weekend? Strolling around an outdoor market will not only get you outside to see the first clues of spring, but also give you the chance to pick up a few new treasures from the vast selection of street food, vintage clothing, household items and other knick-knacks on offer. 

Here are four of my favourite markets in Berlin, all well worth a visit. 

1. Boxhagener Platz Market

The market at Boxhagener Platz in Friedrichshain is beloved by both locals and tourists. It’s open on Sundays from 10am to 6pm and offers a wide selection of trinkets, secondhand clothes and souvenirs. Grab a cup of coffee, browse the stalls and find some new goodies to take home. If you find yourself getting chilly, the streets surrounding the market are lined with cafes, restaurants and little boutiques to dive into.

 2. Kollwitzplatz Market

Since 1996, Kollwitzplatz in Prenzlauer Berg has been hosting regular markets for people to buy organic food, handicrafts, and clothing. This market is held two days a week: Thursdays and Saturdays. The market is great if you are looking for fresh food as it features many local farmers who pick and sell their produce on the same day - the stuff you find here is the freshest in Berlin! It’s for this reason that the market starts relatively late, as far as markets go, at 12pm, to give the farmers time to harvest their produce and get it out to market.

3. Markthalle Neun 

If your inner food lover is calling for good eats, head over to Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg. This indoor market is an all-weather option as it’s set up inside an old railway warehouse which protects visitors from the elements. Open most days from 12 to 6pm, the food market offers high-quality, local products, alongside a range of restaurants and stands offering tasty takeaway dishes and craft beer. This market could be a fun Saturday afternoon date! 

4. Mauerpark Flohmarkt

Want to sing some karaoke and find stuff for your new flat at the same time? Check out Mauerpark on a Sunday. This flea market is a favourite among many locals and is open most weekends from 10am to 6pm. There are tons of stalls selling all manner of secondhand goods, from vinyl records and jewellery to bric-a-brac and memorabilia. This is also a great spot for anyone looking for antique furniture. The famous Bearpit Karaoke kicks off at the park's amphitheatre at around 3pm, in case you fancy checking out the performances or crooning a tune of your own. 

Weekends are for getting out

Don’t waste any time indoors now that spring is nearly here! Head to one of these markets for a fresh experience and to see what goodies you can get a hold of on your adventures. There is a market out there for everyone to enjoy, so plan a trip to one of them. Have a nice weekend!
