Following the end of Maidult, visitors and vendors alike prepare for Jakobidult. Taking place each year on the famous Mariahilfplatz in Munich during the last weekend in July, the summer edition of this festival is even more popular - if that's even possible - than the May Fair.

Jakobidult – the second Auer Dult of the year

The Auer Dult is a beloved, traditional folk festival that takes place three times a year in the district of Au in Munich. Stemming back to 1310, the name "Dult" is borrowed from the old German word for observance. Originally celebrated as a fair with a religious background, Auer Dult has grown into a secular event open to everyone, featuring a market, funfair rides, food stalls and much, much more.

The three different Auer Dult festivals are:

  • Meidult in late April or early May
  • Jakobidult in late July or early August
  • Kirchweihdult in October

Folk festival and fair at the heart of Munich

If you are looking for a more family-orientated event to attend in Munich this year, then make sure you mark your calendar for Auer Dult - although there will be plenty of German beer and live music to suit all tastes at Jakobidult as well.

The market at each Auer Dult is widely known for its huge assortment of china, porcelain and tableware, making it the largest pottery fair in Europe. Visitors can also expect to uncover fascinating antiques and rarities, ranging from rare books and old paintings to jewellery and prints at the market, next to new arts and crafts from local merchants.

Numerous funfair rides, such as the merry-go-rounds, bumper cars and swings, offer hours of pleasure for the little ones at Jakobidult, while the adults can pay a visit to the beer garden to sample local dishes and the special Auer Dult Zwickl beer.
