Keeping it clean: Deutsche Bahn promises more cleaners and free toilets

In an effort to improve hygiene on board its trains and at stations across Germany, Deutsche Bahn is planning on hiring more cleaners and making some toilets free to use.

Deutsche Bahn to double the number of cleaners

According to a report by Funke Media Group, the number of cleaning staff working on Deutsche Bahn trains is set to double to 500 by July. By August, the number of these so-called “on-the-go cleaners” will increase again to 600.

In total, the rail company employs 4.300 cleaners nationwide, who are responsible for maintaining hygiene standards on board trains and in stations across the country. Deutsche Bahn cleaners carry out tasks such as disinfecting door handles and handrails, toilet facilities, and ticket and snack machines, and have therefore increased in importance in the midst of the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

Free disinfectant and toilets at some German stations

The report also states that Deutsche Bahn plans to install disinfectant dispensers at around 180 stations and 150 service points across the country. In addition, toilet facilities at the 20 largest train stations - including those in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt and Cologne - will be made free of charge to allow people to wash their hands.

Masks will also be made available for sale on board long-distance trains, for 1,50 euros each. According to the report, the company has recently purchased 19 million masks.

“We are cleaning our trains and stations more than ever,” said Berthold Huber, Board Member for Passenger Transport. “At the same time, we are asking our passengers for their help. If everyone adheres to hygiene and mask rules, everyone will arrive safely at their destination.”
